President Mahama sacks National Ambulance Service CEO Dr. Nuhu Zakaria

President Mahama has sacked CEO of National Ambulance Service, Nuhu Zakaria

President John Dramani Mahama has officially dismissed Dr. Nuhu Zakaria from his position as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Ambulance Service, amid increasing public and institutional scrutiny surrounding his alleged misuse of the academic title “Professor.”

Although the presidency has yet to issue a formal statement detailing the reasons for Dr. Zakaria’s termination, the move closely follows a directive from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), which accused the former CEO of academic misrepresentation.

GTEC Exposes Misuse of Academic Title

In a strongly worded letter dated June 21, 2024, GTEC clarified that only universities with a presidential charter have the authority to award professorial titles. The Commission stated:

“You are directed to desist from using the title ‘Professor’ with immediate effect, as it has not been conferred on you by a legally mandated body.”

GTEC emphasized that self-awarding such titles constitutes academic fraud and misrepresentation, raising ethical concerns about credibility in public office.

Was the GTEC Report the Reason for Dr. Zakaria’s Dismissal?

While the presidency has not issued an official statement explaining Dr. Zakaria’s removal, the timing suggests a direct link to the GTEC’s findings. The scandal has sparked public outrage, with many questioning how such discrepancies went unnoticed during his appointment.

Dr. Zakaria, a respected emergency medical specialist, played a key role in expanding Ghana’s ambulance services, improving emergency response systems nationwide. However, the credibility crisis now overshadows his contributions.
